Review Comments
The evidence shows this character is used for the 反切上字 of 嫈. In 《廣韻》, we can find as least three fanqies: 烏莖切, 於營切, 鷖迸切. The tone of 鷖迸切 is 去聲, and we all know the common tone of 嫈 is 平聲. The evidence shows tone is 平聲 as well.
For 烏莖切 and 於營切, the finals (韻母) are different, but the initials (聲母) are the same, which are both 影母. The submitted character is not the variant of 烏. 《廣韻》 shows the fanqie for 戹 is 於革切, so the initial for 戹 is also 影母. Therefore, 戹莖切 is similar to 烏莖切 here.
The submitted character is also used in other context in 大正藏. And the following show it is the variant of 戹 clearly.
